Larry Meyers passed away unexpectedly on May 17, 2013 at home in Gearhart. He was 71.
Larry was born in Portland on December 13, 1941 to Rosalie and Foster Meyers. He grew up in Portland and graduated from Cleveland High School in 1959 where he was a member of the National Honor Society and an outstanding sprinter on the school track team.
He attended Oregon State University where he affiliated with Sigma Chi fraternity, and graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in education.
After college, Larry served stateside as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Military Police Corp. Larry then began his career in the automotive industry by working at Riviera Motors in Beaverton, rising to vice president/general manager of the dealership. In 1980, he moved on to become president and general manager of Larry Meyers Porsche-Audi Inc. During this time, Larry was appointed president of the Metro Portland Auto Dealers Association and elected president at the Portland Metropolitan Business Association. In 1989, Larry moved to Gearhart and recently retired from the Oregon State Department of Transportation.
Larry also devoted his time and energy to a variety of civic and volunteer activities, including his participation as a board member/sponsor of the LPGA Portland Golf Tournament and appointment as chairman of the March of Dimes, Oregon Chapter.He particularly enjoyed his work with youth athletic programs at Boys Club of Portland Metropolitan Area and West Sylvan Grade School. Recently his love of animals drew him to volunteer at Clatsop County Animal Shelter.
An avid tennis player, Larry was a member of the Racquet Club of Portland, where he won numerous tennis awards and championships. Larry possessed a huge following of friends from all walks of life and had a smile that drew folks to him like a magnet.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Donnelly Meyers, daughter Kristina and her husband Frank; grandchildren Knute and Hannah Geary; stepdaughters Kirsten Larsen and Stephanie Allenbaugh and their families; and sister, Janet Terpstra and husband John.
The family suggests donations to Clatsop County Animal Shelter-1315 SE 29th Street-Warrenton, Oregon 97156.

Glenn Nelson (1/9/2011)
Glenn Nelson, Class of January 1940 and long-time member of the CCHSAA Scholarship Committee died on January 9, 2011 at age 89. Glenn was a member of the 1939 football team nicknamed the "Ironmen" for having played both offense and defense every single minute during a victorious game against Grant High School. The Ironmen were responsible for forming the Commerce High School Alumni Scholarship Fund, now the Commerce/Cleveland high School Scholarship Fund.
Glenn was Student Body President, Treasurer of Hi-Y, member of the school play production staff and also took part in other school activities.
Since its inception in 1996, Glenn was a hard-working member of the Scholarship Committee. He chaired the team of interviewers for the Don Mitchell Ironman Scholarship, was a generous provider of the wine for many Scholarship luncheons, and was always willing to do anything asked of him. The word "no" was not in his vocabulary.
Glenn was employed by Blue Cross of Oregon for many years in their electronic data processing department.
A memorial service was held in Astoria on February 17 where Glenn was buried next to his beloved wife, Sophie.
He will be missed by all, especially his son Gary who would drive Glenn when he was no longer able to drive himself.

Phyllis G. Mitchell (04/07/2010)
Phyllis G. Mitchell passed away at her home on April 7th, 2010 after a long illness.
Phyllis Mae Gierlich was born in Minot, N.D.. she and her family moved to Seattle and eventually settled in Portland when she was 6 years old. She met Bob Mitchell, the love of her life, at Commerce High School where Phyllis had the honor of being the school's Rose Festival princess in 1939. Bob and Phyllis married in 1942.
Phyllis loved fashion and was a gifted seamstress. She also had a talent for home decorating including making her own drapes, lamp shades and rugs. She was a wonderful hostess and loved to give parties.
Phyllis lived a very active life. she skied, played tennis, golf and badminton. As a child, she was a gymnast and she would entertain her children and their friends with hand stands and back flips as they enjoyed the after school treats she had prepared for them.
Phyllis was active at the Multnomah Athletic Club where she chaired the social committee. She also volunteered at Physicians and Surgeons Hospital where she helped establish a gift shop. She also loved to travel and she and Bob visited many foreign countries.
Frank Frangipani-03/21/2010
Former faculty member and friend to many at CHS, Frank Frangipani, passed away due to complications from an unfortunate accident.He was born to Achille and Bruna Frangipani and raised in Portland. He attended Central Catholic High School and the University of Portland where he earned his bachelor's and master's degree in foreign language followed by a second master's degree in administration. In 1954 Frank started teaching at Nestucca High School for three years. He then moved to Cleveland High School as a teacher , counselor and vice principal for 32 years. The last eight years of his career were spent at Franklin High School serving as vice principal.
He retired to Pacific City in 1987. During retirement, Frank enjoyed dory fishing, hunting and was an active member of the Tillamook Elks Club. Frank is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lillian; sons Keith, Brian, Mark and Kent; sister Lori Huffsttler; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Hubert "Hub" Shovlin
Hubert "Hub" Shovlin, 88, passed away September 18, 2009.
A dignified and moving military burial service was held on September 23rd in the Willamette National Cemetary to celebrate the passing of Hubert Shovlin, and to acknowledge his service to our country s a U.S. Marine Corps officer in both World War II and the Korean War.
Hub was born and raised in Denver where his accomplishments as a high school athlete earned him an athletic scholarship to the University of Colorado. He played football there from 1939 to 1942 and was awarded a bachelor's degree. After graduating from college, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was commissioned as an officer.
During World War II, he served in both the Guam and the Iwo Jima campaigns. He would later serve in Korea where he fought in the grueling Chosin Reservoir battle and, as a survivor, became a member of the legendary "Chosin Few".
After his military service, Hub obtained his master's degree from the University of Denver and moved with his family to Portland. He was quickly hired by the Portland Public Schools to teach high school science and coach both varsity football and track at Cleveland High School.
Following his successful career in the classroom and on the field, Hub acquired his administrative credentials and became a vice-principal for the district. He worked at Grant, Wilson and Jackson high schools until his retirment.
In the years after he retired, Hub continued to spend time vacationing at the Oregon coast and enjoyed countless hours in the compay of his family and friends.
All who knew him will miss his quiet, commanding, generous and loving nature. Donations in his name may be made to the American Cancer Society.
