Phyllis G. Mitchell (04/07/2010)


Phyllis G. Mitchell passed away at her home on April 7th, 2010 after a long illness.


Phyllis Mae Gierlich was born in Minot, N.D.. she and her family moved to Seattle and eventually settled in Portland when she was 6 years old. She met Bob Mitchell, the love of her life, at Commerce High School where Phyllis had the honor of being the school's Rose Festival princess in 1939. Bob and Phyllis married in 1942.


Phyllis loved fashion and was a gifted seamstress. She also had a talent for home decorating including making her own drapes, lamp shades and rugs. She was a wonderful hostess and loved to give parties.


Phyllis lived a very active life. she skied, played tennis, golf and badminton. As a child, she was a gymnast and she would entertain her children and their friends with hand stands and back flips as they enjoyed the after school treats she had prepared for them.


Phyllis was active at the Multnomah Athletic Club where she chaired the social committee. She also volunteered at Physicians and Surgeons Hospital where she helped establish a gift shop. She also loved to travel and she and Bob visited many foreign countries.
